‘New Scuplture’ – Viv Levy
‘New Scuplture’ – Viv Levy
12 January 1991 - 23 February 1991
In contrast to the last show of Paula Rego etchings, Castlefield Gallery are now exhibiting the sculptures of London based artist Viv Levy.
Viv has recently completed a year at Wimbledon School of Art where she was working as the Henry Moore Fellow, developing her own work, much of which is included in this exhibition. Having trained at St Martins School of Art and at the Royal College Viv has exhibited her work widely. She is familiar with Manchester through occasional teaching at the polytechnic’s sculpture department.
The sculpture follows a tradition in their construction. The non-figurative forms evolve from welded scrap steel, its surfaces often left untouched. Although the welding plays an important part in the construction Viv is also concerned with a natural looking joining of pieces. She looks at ways that the metal can lock together, forming natural bonds. From smaller works that employ a delicacy and intricacy with their grids and fine wires, to the impressive substantial large sculptures which cope in the outdoors with their curved forms and naturally rusted surfaces.
Castlefield Gallery plans to situate larger works around the Castlefield area and continuing its involvement with education is to set a number of workshops and talks around the exhibition.
