Castlefield Gallery and The Heretic Club present: Can Art Change the World?

06 May 2008

19:30 - 21:00

Bringing nonconformist ideas back to Manchester, The Heretic Club launches a new series of critical debates that challenges cultural dogma. In this session we will ask, can protest art really change society or are artists just flattering themselves? Recently, Mark Wallinger recreated a protester’s banners and slogans in Tate Britain and Cornelia Parker concerns herself with environmentalism, what difference do these artists make? Come and share your views with the panel and the audience of artists, local residents and cultural commentators, face-to-face and in real time.

Speakers:
Steve Klee – Artist and PhD researcher in art, politics and the collective subject, Department of Art, Goldsmiths University of London.

James Leadbitter – member of ‘the vacuum cleaner collective’, fashioning radical social and ecological change by using various creative tactics.

Saira Law – the Chair, Founder and Manager of The Heretic Club.
