Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Jude Wainwright
Posted on 18 October 2023
This month we have asked Jude Wainwright to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.
Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?
I’m an artist living and working in Manchester, having settled there after receiving a BA Hons in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2009. Self-portraiture frames the basis of my work. I paint as a form of escape, releasing an idea, a dream or memory realised on canvas. Much like diary entries, the paintings serve as keep sakes, a space for reflection and rumination.
I am inspired by the performance of rituals as a means of therapy. Rituals have the ability to empower us – to help us learn, grow and reconnect with ourselves. The idea of regaining ‘control’ through creating repetitive habits in order to soothe feelings of anxiety is something I am drawn to.
The creation of the works themselves additionally provides me a form of meditation – A sense of control is gained with the repetition of the harlequin patterns (worn by some of the subjects) a ritual that features across many of my works.
How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates and why did you want to join?
I was inspired by an artist friend of mine who is an existing member and could see the benefits she was gaining like one on one mentorship etc. I also want to really strengthen my artistic connections in Manchester and beyond as being part of a wider community is something I’m passionate about.
What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?
Im excited to get to know the other members more, visit the gallery and use the plethora of opportunities Castlefield Gallery Associates offers to focus and strengthen my practice.
