Volunteer Spotlight: Aofei Lv

Posted on 30 November 2023

This month we have asked Volunteer Aofei Lv to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.

Thank you to our fabulous volunteers for their amazing work.

Hi Aofei! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

I’m Aofei Lv, an independent scholar and consultant based in Manchester. I began volunteering at Castlefield Gallery in July 2023. Prior to this experience, my personal life had very limited connection to the art world, aside from occasional gallery visits during my travels around the world.

What made you want to volunteer here?

As a professionally trained scholar, I believe that academic work should transcend the boundaries of scholarly circles and reach a wider audience, thereby making a real impact in the world. My interest in art has led me to recognize the similarities between the work of artists and scholarly endeavors, both requiring an ability to step outside the ‘comfort zone’ and connect with as many people as possible. While my previous experiences may not be directly related to art, I have acquired valuable expertise through my active involvement in various volunteer positions across different organizations. I am eager to leverage my skills and knowledge to contribute to Castlefield Gallery in pursuit of its mission.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?

Flexible working hours are essential for me, given the demands of my work and personal interests. I need to efficiently manage my time while juggling multiple tasks, interactions with various people, and involvement in different organizations daily. Castlefield Gallery excels in managing its extensive pool of volunteers in a smart way. Volunteers have the autonomy to choose when they can undertake specific tasks, and even if we need to make sudden schedule adjustments, there are always volunteers available to step in and provide support.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

Life in Manchester is full of fun and opportunities. The city presents a rich landscape to explore, encompassing history, modernity, culture, industry, politics, and the arts. Castlefield Gallery stands as one of Manchester’s most vibrant and lively galleries, providing a unique window into the city’s essence and the people who inhabit it. We wholeheartedly welcome you to become a part of our extended family, where you are sure to have an exceptional and enriching experience!
