Volunteer Spotlight: Yasmin Green

This month we have asked Volunteer Yasmin Green to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.

Hi Yasmin! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

Hi there! I am currently a third year university student studying Fine Art at MMU. Within my art practice I explore themes of manipulation and transformation within the found object, using sculpture as a form of expression to challenge perceptions of beauty within the everyday. As well as art, I have a love of travelling and a passion for photography. I began volunteering at Castlefield Gallery in October 2023.

 What made you want to volunteer here?

I heard about Castlefield Gallery through a family friend. It seemed like a great way to immerse myself into the Manchester art scene, whilst gaining valuable new skills and experience. Prior to university, I had volunteered at a community arts centre where I met local artists and helped to curate exhibitions. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and it helped me to make my final decision about pursuing art at university. Once at university, I wanted to continue my support and involvement within the art community. Everyone at Castlefield Gallery is super welcoming and friendly, so I thought that this would be the perfect place to start!

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?

I appreciate how Castlefield Gallery allows the volunteers to really become involved within all aspects of the gallery. Whether that’s greeting customers at the reception desk, or helping to put together an installation, or preparing the gallery for a new exhibition, there is always a diverse range of tasks to help out with. It’s really interesting to see all the preparation and daily responsibilities that come with running a gallery. Castlefield Gallery is also quite small which makes it a really nice community and environment to be in, plus making it easier to speak to people and become friendly with the other volunteers.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?

I would tell them to definitely go for it! It’s the perfect way to meet new people who share similar interests as you, especially if you’re new to Manchester, for example if you’re a student. It’s also a great way to make a positive impact and contribution within the art community, whilst also giving you a chance to learn new skills and gain confidence.
