Getting your work out there

Castlefield Gallery is running a professional development seminar – Getting your work out there for anyone wanting to develop and further their practice as a contemporary visual artist on Saturday 28 March.

The afternoon seminar forms part of a year long Emerging Artist Programme created and managed by Castlefield Gallery (Manchester) for the Brewery Arts Centre* (Cumbria).

The sessions will be of interest to contemporary visual artists looking for inspiration and gaining an insight into how curators and galleries work with artists, working with commercial galleries and dealers, gaining commissions, and bidding for residencies. The afternoon will include a masterclass and World Café sessions.

Who will be speaking?

International curator, and manager of Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre (and Poet) Tony Trehy will share his extensive experience of working with artists, including commissioning new work for The Irwell Sculpture Trail and Bury Light Night, and curating in a masterclass presentation.

Tony Trehy will then be one of 3 table hosts at a World Café session, where attendees have the opportunity to spend 40 minutes with each table host in small groups, asking questions and discussing ideas. The other table hosts are; Elizabeth Wewiora, an artist and curator currently working between Manchester and Glasgow, and Jennie Syson, director of SYSON, a new commercial contemporary art gallery in Nottingham City Centre.

Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.  Booking essential via eventbrite.

The seminar is free for Brewery Arts Centre* EAP artists and CG Associate members but a £5 refundable deposit is required to secure your ticket, which will be returned when you attend the event. The amount will be refunded via eventbrite no later than Friday 10 April 2015.

Tickets are £5 for all other artists.

If the appropriate ticket type is sold out then please join the waiting list and will be notified when any tickets become available.

VENUE: Please note that the afternoon session will take place at New Art Spaces Federation House, Federation Street/Balloon Street, Manchester (close to Shudehill Bus/Tram station).

**In addition to the above afternoon seminar, Castlefield Gallery’s Director Kwong Lee invites attendees to join him earlier in the day for look around some of Manchester’s smaller contemporary art venues. Meet Kwong Lee at 11:30am at Castlefield Gallery (2 Hewitt Street, M15 4GB behind Deansgate Train Station).

*The Brewery Arts Centre, based in Kendal, is currently delivering a programme of mentoring and professional development for three selected Emerging Artists in association with Castlefield Gallery and funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Trust. This project will culminate in an exhibition of work by the mentored artists at the Brewery Arts Centre in 2015.

**Please note: Due to improvement works to the Metrolink network across the city the step-free access will not be available between the Deansgate/Castlefield stop and street level or the stop and Deansgate Rail Station from Monday 19 January to summer 2015. Passengers requiring a step-free route from Metrolink to Deansgate Rail station are advised to use the St Peter’s Square tram stop instead.
