Mapping Artists’ Professional Development Programmes in the UK: Knowledge and Skills

Castlefield Gallery was very pleased to contribute to towards Mapping Artists’ Professional Development Programmes in the UK: Knowledge and Skills, a piece of research into Artists’ Professional Development Programmes in the UK conducted for Chisenhale Gallery by Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt with funding from Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

The report was commissioned to map the range of knowledge- and skills-focused professional development programmes currently offered by arts organisations across the United Kingdom. Available online and as a print-on-demand publication, it serves to identify examples of best practice and to explore new ways of supporting artists. It is hoped that this report will be of interest to the cultural sector as a whole – from artists taking part in such programmes, or contemplating doing so, to curators, programme organisers and those that fund them.

The work of Castlefield Gallery is referenced several times throughout the report including our CG Associates members scheme, as well as our research, Mapping Artists’ CPD in Greater Manchester carried out in 2012, commissioned by Contemporary Visual Arts Manchester (CVAM); our Analysing Artists’ Continual Professional Development (CPD) in Greater Manchester: towards and integrated approach for talent development, a six-month study was conducted in association with the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD) at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU); and Castlefield Gallery jointly hosting a PhD with Manchester Metropolitan University, looking at the qualitative value of artists’ professional development, which will see doctoral candidate Rebecca Hartley taking Castlefield Gallery as a case study.
