And Let The Walls Loose

Macclesfield Barnaby Festival presents And Let the Walls Loose, a group show of seven artists exploring the poetics of birth, death and midsummer. Housed in an old 19th Century silk mill, the exhibition includes new and site-specific works in sculpture, painting, drawing and 16mm film. The title is taken from the Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim’s poem For You, Against You (1933) which explores the artist’s relationship to the environment – physical, metaphysical and spiritual – and the perpetual struggle between creativity and destruction. A lyrical quality weaves the works within this exhibition together, eliciting notions of superstition, ritual and the astronomical with sentiments that are simultaneously seductive, surreal and elegiac.
