Ryan Gander OBE announced as guest selector of the Castlefield Gallery spring 2020 Members Exhibition

Posted on 9 September 2019

Castlefield Gallery is thrilled to announce that our spring 2020 Members Exhibition will be co-selected with Castlefield Gallery Curator Matthew Pendergast and guest selector Ryan Gander OBE.

Since 2014 Gander has been Castlefield Gallery’s artist patron.  Born in Chester, UK, (1976), Gander received his undergraduate degree from Manchester Metropolitan University’s BA (Hons) Interactive Arts course in 2000. He has since then established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms from sculpture to film, writing, graphic design, installation, performance and more besides.  Through associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge, a reinvention of the modes of appearance and creation of an artwork. His work can be reminiscent of a puzzle, a network with multiple connections, the fragments of an embedded story, a huge set of hidden clues to be deciphered, encouraging viewers to make their own connections and invent their own narrative in order to solve the charade with its many solutions, staged by the artist.

Gander studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, NL and the Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, NL. He has received several prestigious awards such as the Paul Hamlyn Award for Visual Arts (2007), ABN AMRO prize of the Netherlands (2006) and the Zürich Art Prize (2009) and is currently in a Princeton Hodder Fellowship from 2019 — 2020. He frequently exhibits internationally, developing major projects for festival and biennials. His work is held in several public collections across Europe, the USA and Asia including Arts Council England, Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA and The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan.

Members of Castlefield Gallery Associates, our scheme for artists, writers and independent curators, can propose an exhibition or other project for spring 2020 as part of the gallery’s exhibition programme. The selected Castlefield Gallery Associate will receive a budget of up to £2,000 as well as curatorial guidance and technical support for the exhibition, which will run from 22 May-21 June 2020.

Please note that, for this exhibition, the upper gallery is not available and proposals must be for an exhibition or other project using the downstairs gallery space only.

Deadline for proposals: 12 noon, Tuesday 5 November 2019
