Deadlines:

  • Friday 13 December for events taking place from 20 February to 8 March
  • Friday 31 January for events taking place from 13 March to 5 April
Are you looking for a space to do something with other people? Is there something you’ve been wanting to do but you haven‘t had anywhere to do it? Would you like to hold a crit group, a book club, a community gathering, a talk, a workshop, a darning club, a meeting, a class, a making session…something else?

We are inviting artists, creatives and leaders of  community and social groups to hold their own events at Castlefield Gallery from 20 February to 5 April 2025. We are working with artist Kay Shah who will be transforming our lower gallery space into a multifunctional installation titled 40 Years of the Future: Degrees of Duality. This work will be part of a programme of exhibitions and events that brings our 40 anniversary year to a close. During this period our upper gallery will be used as a meeting and gathering space which will also include the display of posters, books, editions and other material from Castlefield Galery’s archive. There will also be work by Matthew Wood on the windows of our double height space as well as the windows of our new art spaces in Warrington and Chester.

Degrees of Duality will incorporate motifs drawn from different cultural traditions, including the fleur-de-lis, predominantly used in European heraldry which will appear alongside geometric and tessellated patterns found in Pakistani, Indian and Islamic architecture. For Shah, bringing these motifs together highlights the cohesion and tensions that persist in the intertwined histories of the cultures they are drawn from. Shah’s installation will contrast open and closed, physical and digital spaces, encouraging minds to wander through and beyond them. The artist and gallery hope this space will be an invitation for others to redefine it and make it their own.

How to apply

If you would like to hold an event at Castlefield Gallery please fill out the form below.

If you have any queries about applying please email Ryan Peter French at ryan@castlefieldgallery.co.uk

The event slots will be allocated by Castlefield Gallery Curator Matthew Pendergast and Castlefield Gallery Artist Environmental Lead Jane Lawson. We will allocate event slots according to what we feel is possible and appropriate for the gallery to host. When coming up with your event, please bear in mind the nature of the space as an exhibition space with artwork on show  – e.g. sessions with drawing and watercolours will be possible, but not necessarily oil paints or messy activities.

We want to use this opportunity to think about how we can use the gallery space differently. As we come to the close of marking 40 years we are looking firmly towards the next 40 years, reinforcing our commitment to supporting artists and making new art happen.

We are a home for artists. We hope these works will create space for us to continue conversations around what the gallery is, what it can be and who it is for.
