Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Ashleigh Beattie

This month we have asked Ashleigh Beattie to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.

Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?

I’m Ashleigh, a Zimbabwean born artist living and working in Manchester. My art practice explores themes of displacement and belonging. As an artist living in the diaspora I am interested in migration and the movement of people ,whether it be for political, social or economical reasons. My sculptures and installations are mainly created out of repurposed everyday materials, such as newspapers and tin cans.

How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates and why did you want to join?

I first heard about Castlefield Gallery through a good artist friend who has been in Manchester longer than me and has navigated the art networks. I joined to become part of the art community here in Manchester and to gain access to the support the gallery offers.

What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?

I am hoping to be able to attend more workshops and events Castlefield Gallery will be hosting, giving me a chance to get to know other artists in the area and also to develop my practice.
