Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Eileen Bradbury

Posted on 2 November 2024

This month we have asked Eileen Bradbury to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.

Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?

I am a painter. I was a psychologist working with Plastic Surgeons. The journey from there to here was triggered by undertaking an MA and then an MFA in painting at Manchester School of Art. Both careers have focussed on the visible world around us to which we react emotionally, viscerally and with our curiosity to explore and give meaning to what we see. I have found as I paint that my response as both a painter and a psychologist has been to immerse myself in intense expressive colour, with the richness of oil paint. Through painting I have expressed feelings where words have been insufficient, carrying further the conversation within myself and with others. And my practice is constantly evolving as I continue to learn.

How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates and why did you want to join?

As I met with other artists, fellow students, curators and gallery owners, I found that these people often made reference to Castlefield Gallery. It seemed central to the work of artists in Manchester and the North West. I investigated and found that in addition to the shows and public events, there are many ways of connecting with other artists and creatives, and advice on building my practice as a professional painter. Support away from life as an MA student. Plus a discount at Fred Aldous – what’s not to like!

What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?

I look forward to further advisory sessions, which have been hugely helpful, and indeed more general support of the same – contacts, support, learning, discussions. And as I have settled into my lovely new studio and have drawn breath,  a determination to use what is so richly available to me at Castlefield.
