Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight: Pia Järvinen

Posted on 5 March 2025

This month we have asked Pia Järvinen to contribute to our Castlefield Gallery Associates Spotlight series, in which current Castlefield Gallery Associates share their thoughts on what the programme offers and how it has been useful for them.

Can you tell us a little bit about your practice?

I am a Finnish-born, Manchester-based artist working primarily in abstract painting. My practice is rooted in expressive, bold brushwork and vivid colour, creating layered, imaginative soulscapes that draw inspiration from nature. My work explores themes of emergence, transformation, and the joy of being fully present. I see abstract art as an invitation—offering the viewer a space free from rigid interpretation, where imagination can roam freely. My paintings originate from a place of peace and awe, and through them, I aim to create moments of stillness, curiosity, and playful discovery. Art has also been an integral part of my own journey toward mental well-being, helping me examine and release limiting beliefs while embracing creative freedom.

How did you hear about Castlefield Gallery Associates, and why did you want to join?

I discovered Castlefield Gallery Associates while researching opportunities to connect with other artists and expand my professional network. As an artist who has been working in relative isolation, I was drawn to this community. I was also looking for guidance on developing my art career, particularly in accessing gallery networks, learning more about the business side of art, and finding opportunities to work within a community of artists. Castlefield Gallery Associates seemed like the perfect platform to support my growth in these areas.

What are you looking forward to most about your coming year’s membership?

I’m excited about the opportunity to network with other artists and participate in discussions that challenge and inspire my practice. Having access to professional development resources and events will continue to be invaluable as I work toward my goals of exhibiting more widely and building a sustainable art career. Most of all, I’m eager to feel part of a creative community that supports and nurtures artists at different stages of their journey.
