When the communications by mobile phone text messages are explored over 3 days, we gain insight to the lives of 10 urban dwellers. Their abbreviated language tells a story of modern life with poetic and explicit results.
Heroes’ Night with the Montgolfier Brothers
17/02/2000 / 20:00Good times – Heroes Night will be relaunching a celebration of the heroes in our lives. Heroes is a unique series of art workshops throughout February/March that will become an exhibition at Castlefield Gallery on 8an 9th April 2000. The exhibition will kick-off with the Heroes party on the evening of the 7th April with DJ’S and celebrity guests.
So, if your hero is a pop star, humanitarian, or both! – This is your chance to make it known to the world!
Beat music – Having recently been slated to sign a new record label “poptones” – the newest venture of Alan McGee of Creation records/Oasis fame. The Montgolfier Brothers play their first gig of the century at The Castlefield Gallery. This gig starts an exciting year for these Manchester based musicians who’s blend of indie guitar and film score sublime have been winning critical acclaim in Europe, the US and now the UK.
Fine Art – Heroes night coincides with the exhibition ‘A Poetic Geography of five continents’ by painter Blaise Drummond. Fresh from his recent success in the 20th John Moores Liverpool Exhibition and Contemporary Art Society’s ‘Art Futures’, we are proud to present this solo exhibition of recent work. The exhibition continues until the 26th March.

‘Multi Exposure 2000 Exile’ – The British-Israeli-Palestinian Awards
08/07/2000The original Award scheme, ‘Double Exposure’, was set up in 1993 by photographer Sandra Jacobs to promote the cultural exchange between Britain and Israel. During the first five years, the awards were given to British and Israeli photographers and artists enabling them to spend a month in each other’s country, explore themes of interest, acquaint themselves with a foreign lifestyle and culture to provide a personal project.
‘In My Ladies’ Chamber: Revisited’ – Amanda Ralph
13/02/1999Amanda has produced a continuous series of self-initiated projects, nationally selected exhibitions and commissioned installations, working with several museums galleries and organisations throughout the UK in recent years. ‘In my ladies’ chamber: revisited’ is a culmination of her work to date and brings together work from a selection of projects, predominantly ‘In my Ladies Chamber’ at the Liverpool Museum and her most recent exhibition ‘Found Object Ensemble’ at Ullet Road Unitarian Church, Liverpool.

‘Paintings’ – Martin Murrey
24/04/1999To be a painter of Manchester – as well as a Manchester painter – in the late1990’s is to fly in the face of fashion and the collective wisdom of our age. Martin Murrey has aspired to be both and has succeeded with calm assurance. Working for several years in a studio between Piccadilly Station and the Mancunian Way he has established a dialogue with the life of the city. His pictures tackle the city’s buildings and streets head-on, making unequivocal art from the Manchester that today’s mancunians know – The Cornerhouse, Oxford Road, Mash and Air, Canal Street.
‘Say Cheese’ – Contemporary Art From Zurich
04/08/1999This exhibition is the second part of an exchange project between artists in Manchester and Zurich. In May, four artists from Manchester (Nick Crowe, David Mackintosh, Ian Rawlinson and Martin Vincent) exhibited in Zurich. Now it is time for five artists from Zurich to explore and experience the city of Manchester and to present their work over here.
