Posted on 31 October 2012
Castlefield Gallery Director, Kwong Lee will be a guest speaker alongside Dr. Beccy Kennedy of Manchester Metropolitan University at a talk to be held at Chinese Arts Centre on Thurs 1 Nov from 6-8 pm on the recent Gwangju Biennale and their International Curator Course.
Gwangju Biennale is one of the most prestigious biennales of contemporary art in Asia. They initiated an education program specially designed by Gwangju Biennale Foundation in 2009 for young curators and art practitioners to cultivate expertise in curating. It is a one-month intensive curating course leading up to the opening of the Biennale. This year 24 curators from 18 different countries were selected to take part.
Chinese Arts Centre’s curator Ying Kwok was one of the selected curators for year’s Gwangju Biennale International Curator Course. She is now back in the UK from the course and will be sharing her findings, some insights of the Biennale and artistic opportunities in Korea.
Kwong Lee will talk about CG presenting 5 ‘unsigned’ artists at the young art fair art:gwangju 2012 which coincides with Gwangju Biennale, and the idea of a North West of England and South Korea artist residency exchange programme.
Dr. Beccy Kennedy will share her research in Korean contemporary art. Dr Beccy Kennedy is a lecturer in Contemporary Art History at Manchester Metropolitan University and member of the Asian Cultures group and the Visual Culture Research Centre there. Beccy’s recent, funded research trip to Korea involved visiting the Gwangju biennial, the DMZ and locating artists, curators and NGO workers who examine the political situation of the divided Korea through visual culture.
