Volunteer Spotlight: Abigail Townson

Hi Abi! Tell us a little about yourself. When did you start your placement with Castlefield Gallery?

I’m a second-year History of Art student at the University of Manchester and I started my placement here in September.

What made you want to do a placement here?

I was interested in undertaking a placement at Castlefield Gallery, as it entails taking skills that I have developed across my degree so far and applying them to the setting of a public art gallery. What set this particular placement aside from the other opportunities available through the university, was the firsthand aspect of the role, providing me with an insight into what a career within an art gallery would be like. 

What’s your favourite thing about working with Castlefield Gallery?

The intimate nature of the gallery made me feel very welcome and made my first experience starting a placement far less daunting than I anticipated. Due to the aspect of community created amongst the employees, I felt as though I was free to ask staff any queries I may have, and they were more than happy to help with no judgment. I have always been interested in the marketing and promotion side of art, but carrying out the Communications and Audience Development placement role at the gallery has solidified this interest and is something I definitely would like to take forward into the future.

What would you say to the students who will do a placement with Castlefield Gallery in the future?

I would say that if you have the opportunity to undertake the placement at Castlefield Gallery during your second or third year at The University of Manchester, then definitely do! Utilise the tools and team readily available to you and take advantage of any chances to do more, as it will develop your understanding and experience even further.
