Volunteer Spotlight: Daisy Fulton
Posted on 13 March 2025
This month we have asked Volunteer Daisy Fulton to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.
Hi Daisy! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
Hey! I am in my final year of Fine Art at Manchester School of Art, where I specialise in painting. My practice evolves through layering, reworking, and embracing chance. I like to let my work develop intuitively, with little planning or rules. I have been volunteering at Castlefield Gallery since December 2024, and it has been such a wonderful experience!
What made you want to volunteer here?
Last year, I took a year out from MMU and did a 6-month study abroad exchange in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, followed by a 6-month work placement at Waterside Arts in Sale. During this time, I really saw how important art and cultural spaces are for communities. I wanted to continue being involved in that while finishing my degree. I attended a curator’s talk with Gass and found out about the opportunity to volunteer here. After learning about Castlefield Gallery’s exciting programme, I knew it would be a fun and valuable way to connect with contemporary art in Manchester.
What is your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?
My favourite part is definitely the chance to constantly be surrounded by other creatives. The people here are so enthusiastic about art, and it is inspiring to be part of that energy, it has helped me to develop as an artist. I also love meeting new people, and I have made some great friends since starting. Castlefield Gallery is really supportive of the volunteers, and they let us get involved in ways that suit us, which is great.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
Definitely go for it! From personal experience, the more you get involved, the better. You never know who you might meet or what opportunities could come up. Castlefield Gallery is such a welcoming and friendly place for creatives. If you are a student or new to the art scene in Manchester, it is a fantastic way to get connected. I have really enjoyed my time volunteering here and hope to stick around for a while!
Thank you Daisy and all our fabulous volunteers for your amazing work!
