Volunteer Spotlight: Leona Yeboah

Posted on 15 January 2025

This month, in a slight change to our regular Volunteer Spotlight series, we have asked Leona Yeboah, who is undertaking a placement at Castlefield Gallery, to share her experience with us.

Hi Leona! Tell us a little about yourself. When did you start your placement with Castlefield Gallery?

I’m a third year Art History and History student at the University of Manchester. I am passionate about art and regularly enjoy painting and visiting creative spaces. I started my curatorial placement here at Castlefield Gallery in October 2024.

What made you want to do a placement here?

I wanted to do a placement here as I was interested in the longstanding history of the gallery and the focus here, on nurturing local artists’ and their careers. I found it a valuable opportunity as an Art History student, namely as I am interested in working within curation and exhibition spaces, but also because I am keen to get involved in my local creative communities. Working alongside people at the gallery who are so enthusiastic about art and community solidified me wanting to undertake a placement even more.

What’s your favourite thing about working with Castlefield Gallery?

The active nature of the role is something I have really enjoyed. Each day at Castlefield Gallery comprised of doing something different and it was interesting to experience the different aspects of what a gallery does day to day. I had the opportunity to be involved in the installation of the 40 Years of the Future: Jo McGonigal X Frank Bowling exhibition, even meeting Jo herself and experiencing her artistic practices in real time. The nature of the gallery really makes you feel involved and you become part of the team during your placement. There are so many opportunities to get involved in and you learn so much about art, working in a team and getting involved in your community. The opportunity to plan an event alongside two other placement students has been great, and it’s been a really rewarding opportunity to have my ideas heard and to speak to the two artists exhibited also.

What would you say to the students who will do a placement with Castlefield Gallery in the future?

I would really encourage future students to undertake a placement here and to take every opportunity to get involved. Be inquisitive and ask questions, there is so much to learn and experience!
