Posted on 27 August 2024
This month we have asked Volunteer Rachael Mackerness to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.
Thank you to our fabulous volunteers for their amazing work!
Hi Rachael! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
I have been volunteering since mid-January this year. I am an aspiring creative based in Manchester, originally from Cheshire. After living in Lincoln for 6 years and completing my Masters, I decided to move here for more opportunities in the arts.
What made you want to volunteer here?
I have had a few arts based roles since living in Manchester, working front of house with the likes of Aviva Studios and the Science and Industry Museum. But I really wanted to get hands on experience in a gallery, which Castlefield Gallery have been able to offer me as well as the chance to network and set up events.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?
Having the chance to get involved in the Manchester art scene is really exciting and to meet people in the industry too is a bonus. One thing I really like about working with the artists is that you’re able to speak with them one on one, about their process and appreciate all the hard work that goes into their show. To be a part of their exhibition and make it come to life is something really special.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
If anyone wants to be a part of a creative network and to meet new people, I would recommend volunteering here. Everyone here is so lovely and I love being a part of the team. You can gain great experience which can help you get your foot in the door in the arts.
